THE WORD AND THE SPIRIT

The codex is called the Bible—a compilation of many scrolls—written by many authors over a long period of time. The Bible is filled with instruction, examples, prophesy, and amazing testimonies of love, good, and evil. Each writer was Holy Spirt touched, inspired, and instructed what to write so generations of people (Old and New Testaments) would be directed toward the Son.

This in itself is miraculous, that a being we can’t see tells these men of old what to say in such a way that it remains relevant throughout the ages. That same Holy Spirit compiled the scrolls in exact order, including only what the Father wanted—nothing more and nothing less, either.

I’ve had many discussions with people about the relevancy, accuracy, timeliness, and accountability of His Word. Some reject the notion believing translations have been corrupted. They’re not wrong—Satan has corrupted many translations (a post for another day).

Some reject the entire concept because they believe it is impossible. That’s true! It is impossible through man—but nothing is impossible with God. His Bible remains the best selling, most read book of all time.

Some reject it as incomplete because they believe other scrolls should have been included. God chose not to include the books of Enoch, for example. Why? Many commentators claim it was more like a newspaper, recording the events of the day. Someday we will learn the reason God chose to leave it out! After all, the man who supposedly wrote it was Noah’s great grandfather—the man who did not experience death, but whom God took up (Raptured) into heaven.

Still, God’s rejection of certain ancient writings is not a reason to reject Him altogether. While people have many excuses about rejecting the Word of God, they cannot deny it has survived generations—teaching, instructing, and loving people to the Father, through the Son.

Dr. Henry M Morris from the Institute of Creation Research explains why this occurs…

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:12)

How is it that some people can read a biblical passage and find it either tedious, confusing, or even foolish, whereas others will receive great understanding and blessing from the very same passage? The answer is that the first group are animated only by the spirit of the world, “the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2), whereas believers are indwelled by the Spirit of God, having received the Holy Spirit when they trusted Christ for forgiveness and salvation.

It was, after all, the Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures to begin with. “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16), that is, “God-breathed,” where the “breath of God” is none other than the “Spirit of God.” Concerning his own divinely inspired writings, Paul said: “We speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches” (1 Corinthians 2:13).

Likewise, it is the same Spirit indwelling each believer who illumines, and confirms, and applies His own Scriptures to the individual believer who reads or hears them. “The natural (worldly) man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14). On the other hand, Jesus promised His disciples that “when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13).

This He does through the Scriptures He inspired, with blessings abundant as we study them prayerfully and with believing and obedient hearts.

Amen!
